Tata Power to set up 150 MW wind power plant in Maha, TN

Tata Power Company (TPC) is planning to set up a 150 MW wind power plant in Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu to be commissioned during this year and next year. The company is also in the process of acquiring 20.95 MW operating wind assets in Maharashtra from Niskalp Energy, the company said in a statement.

Currently Tata Power’s wind power capacity is spread across three states namely Maharashtra (100MW), Gujarat (50 MW) and Karnataka (50 MW).The company is progressing as planned on the path of renewable energy and today around 20 per cent of the power generated is from ‘clean’ sources, which we will increase to 25 per cent in 3-4 years. Today our wind portfolio is 200 MW and going forward we intend to add substantially to our renewables portfolio,” Prasad Menon, Managing Director, TPC.

TPC plans to generate at least 8,000 MW to 10,000 MW from low carbon, or zero emission technologies like hydro, solar, wind or from hot gases. At present 20 per cent of TPC’s power comes from clean technologies. “This may go down in the near term, but we aim to have at least one-fourth of our power through such sources,” the company said in a statement.

While the wind power generated in Gujarat and Karnataka is sold under a long term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the State DISCOM’s i.e. BESCOM in Karnataka and GUVNL in Gujarat, the wind power generated in Maharashtra is sold to Tata Power’s Distribution business unit in Mumbai.

Maharashtra, where the some of Tata Power’s wind farms are located, is one of the leading states in promoting wind power generation. The Company’s wind farms are spread across the state viz. Visapur and Sadawaghapur located in Satara District, Khandke and Supa in Ahmednagar District, and Bramanvel in Dhulia district.

TPC’s scrip was trading at Rs 1316.70, up 1.02 per cent on the Bombay Stock Exchange.
